Oakland County Parks & Recreation adds county market to its operation

The Oakland County Parks and Recreation Commission will assume management and operation of the Oakland County Market on June 2, 2012. The market features a Farmers Market on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday May through December, and a Sunday Flea Market and Saturday Farmers Market year round. With more than 300,000 visitors annually, the venue is a mainstay for providing grower-direct fresh produce and flowers to county residents and visitors since 1953.
The Oakland County Parks and Recreation Commission along with the Oakland County Board of Commissioners approved the transfer of operations to the parks system. The market was previously operated by the county’s Facilities Maintenance & Operations division.
“The market aligns with all aspects of the parks system’s mission by encouraging healthy lifestyles, supporting economic prosperity and promoting the protection of natural resources, while at the same time providing high-quality recreational experiences,” Parks Executive Officer Dan Stencil said. “The goal for the market is to promote access to locally grown fresh produce, meat, diary, plants and flowers to residents in an exciting and educational atmosphere.
“Oakland County Parks and Recreation will provide additional services onsite including parks permits, gift cards and educational activities,” Stencil said. “Volunteers will be able to get involved as parking attendants, porters and more.”
The market is operated as a producer-direct venue, requiring all vendors to grow or produce the goods they sell. The 14-acre market site consists of a 7,453-square-foot building with 38 indoor stalls, 32 outdoor stalls under a canopy, 20 non-sheltered stalls, parking for 268 vehicles, an orchard and adjacent woodlot. Vendors leasing space totaled 137 in 2011.
This addition to Waterford Oaks County Park brings the Oakland County Parks and Recreation Commission’s 13 properties to 6,718.82 acres. Waterford Oaks also features a greenhouse on Scott Lake Road that offers indoor and outdoor garden plots, education clinics and plant production.
The market is located at 2350 Pontiac Lake Road in Waterford, adjacent to the Oakland County Executive Office building on the corner of Pontiac Lake Road and County Center Drive.
