Chances are, you know someone who has cancer. It might be your mom, your dad, a friend or even you. The hardships faced and the battles fought are compounded with the normal challenges of life. As friends and loved ones of those with cancer, the best thing we can do is to join the fight and support those who face this challenge.
Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson has been battling pancreatic cancer since March. His administration staff surprised Patterson recently by wearing purple T-shirts they designed to remind him, “Family doesn’t fight alone.”
Purple T-shirts branded with the phrase, “Family doesn’t fight alone” on the front, along with a touch of Patterson’s wit with “Kiss my pancreass” on the back, is the perfect way to support a man who has given so much to others. Purple is the color of pancreatic cancer.
Proceeds from the T-shirts support The Rainbow Connection, a 501 (c)(3) charity founded by the county executive over 30 years ago to grant wishes for seriously ill children. His staff presented him with a $300 check for the charity in his honor.
Wiping away a few tears, Brooks said this kind of support will help him triumph over cancer.
“You guys are really something,” he told the staff. “Well it’s about time I have some good news, too. It seems my doctors think I’m progressing, and that the cancer is getting smaller. There’s no doubt in my mind that it’s in part because of your support and your love that you send me every day.”
Patterson said the support and momentum can benefit others battling severe illnesses as well.
George Miller, former director of Oakland County Health and Human Services and current executive director of The Rainbow Connection, applauded the idea to honor Patterson and raise donations for the charity he founded.
“Supporting The Rainbow Connection through the #TeamBrooks T-shirts is a wonderful way to show support for Brooks as he battles pancreatic cancer,” Miller said. “That support will help make wishes come true for our Rainbow Connection children.”
