Brothers’ short film up for Blue Water Film Festival awards

Troy natives Mike and Steve Kopera have combined forces to create a children’s short film, “My Friend Peter.”

The brothers collaborated on the award-winning short with Mike, now a resident of Los Angeles, writing the screenplay and Steve, who is based in Ann Arbor, acting as director.

The 11-minute comedy is nominated for a number of awards at the Blue Water Film Festival in Port Huron this month and has already nabbed Best Children’s Film at the Detroit-Windsor International Film Festival and Audience Choice Award at the Brainwash Movie Festival in Oakland, Calif.

While Mike and Steve partnered up on the project from the beginning, many others helped along the way — including the Kopera’s additional two brothers, John and Matt, who helped to produce the film and suggest that it be extended it to feature-length, respectively.

“He read it and got the bizarre world I’m trying to create,” Mike said of older brother, Steve. “I’m really lucky to have a brother willing to direct a movie I’m in.”
