Southfield’s shared-use culinary lab invites new entrepreneurs to the table

The area’s first-of-its-kind shared-use kitchen just opened its doors with high hopes in Southfield. Food pros Cassandra Morrison and Jo Coleman bring the 24-hour cooking space, dubbed The Culinary Studio, to the metro area after the concept gained popularity in places like Los Angeles and Chicago.

Coleman and Morrison hope to provide an avenue with which people can explore and grow their cooking aspirations. The grand opening was attended by city dignitaries as well as a former Top Chef contestant.

The Southfield studio is 1,900 square feet, and has a walk-in cooler and freezer, two full-size convection ovens, nine stainless and maple tables, as well as food processors, microwaves and mixers.

“We’ve been researching shared-use kitchens for the past three years. We were talking to a woman in Chicago with a shared-use
kitchen … it was so successful, that in three years, the kitchen went
from 1,500 to 4,000 square feet.”
