Oakland County’s MI Great Artist is a whole new kind of arts competition

Oakland County, in conjunction with Southfield’s Park West Gallery, is pleased to announce a brand-new arts competition: MIGreatArtist™.
MIGreatArtist™ is not a traditional kind of arts competition; this competition takes place entirely online, from submissions right on down to the public voting. Visual artists 18 years old+ can submit images and descriptions of up to five 2D works online. The public then votes, and from the top 20 artists a panel of five arts professionals will select five finalists. The winner of MIGreatArtist™ will be determined by a combination of jury score and public vote.
The MIGreatArtist™ winner will receive a $1,000 cash prize; custom framing of the five submitted artworks by Park West Gallery (a $500 value); inclusion a group exhibition at Park West Gallery in September; a scholarship to attend FastTrac NewVenture, a comprehensive series of classes and workshops designed for new and aspiring entrepreneurs offered through Oakland County’s One Stop Shop/Business Center ($700 value); their artwork featured on a poster promoting one of Oakland County’s signature quality of life events, printed by Park West Gallery ($700 value); and solo exhibitions at McLaren Oakland and Lawrence Technological University.
Four runners-up will receive a $250 cash prize; custom framing of five pieces; inclusion in the group exhibition; a scholarship to attend one Business Basics workshop offered through Oakland County’s One Stop Shop/Business Center and a one-hour consultation with an Oakland County business development representative; and a two-month solo exhibition at Oakland County Galleria.
The MIGreatArtist™ competition is open to visual artists living, working or attending school in the six-county region of the Economic Growth Alliance – Oakland, Macomb, St. Clair, Livingston, Lapeer and Genesee counties. Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson states “It will encourage and showcase creativity by engaging our regional artists to paint, sketch or draw original works” and says of the public voting process, “think American Idol.”
Entries must be received by July 20. Public voting runs from July 25 through August 17. The five finalists will be announced on August 24 and the group exhibition at Park West Gallery will run from September 4 through September 28, with the MIGreatArtist™ winner announcement and awards ceremony on September 14.
