Stagecrafters receives $38,000 in grants

Stagecrafters recently received two grants totaling $38,000 from Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural affairs in mid-December 2013. The grants will assist with both capital improvements and operating expenses.

The capital improvement grant for $24,000 will help Stagecrafters renovate the orchestra pit of the Baldwin Theatre. The orchestra pit, original to the 92-year-old theatre, will be enlarged and brought up to current building codes. “We are thrilled to receive this matching grant for the orchestra pit. Not only will the pit expansion and enhancement allow more musicians to participate in our shows but it will also insure the integrity of the entertainment that Stagecrafters provides,” said Stagecrafters executive director Mary Ann McCourt. Stagecrafters estimates that approximately 50,000 people come through the doors of the Baldwin Theatre each year to either watch or participate in the live theatrical productions. The project is scheduled for Summer 2014.

The operating expenses grant, a matching Program for Operational and Project Support (POPS) grant of $14,000, will be used to enhance Stagecrafters community outreach, aid operational support and advance the curriculum of their Summer 1000 Hats Youth Improvisation Program.  “A portion of this grant will provide free tickets to at-risk youth to attend a youth theatre performance.  This just fortifies our mission to make live theatre accessible for all,” said McCourt.
