Detroit Zoo project to bring lions, visitors close

The lions are getting closer to the people at the Detroit Zoo.

Lions at the Detroit Zoo are about to
become the mane event.

Officials say beginning next spring the lion habitat at the
suburban Detroit facility will undergo a $1 million makeover
intended to bring the big cats closer.

Spokeswoman Patricia Mills Janeway tells The Detroit News that a
glass wall will replace a dry moat barrier and nearly double the
habitat’s size.

She said warming rocks near the glass will provide a toasty
lions’ perch and give visitors a close-up view. Trees, plantings
and rocks in the visitor area will mirror the habitat.
