Summer Camps in Oakland County

Spring is finally here and summer is just around the corner! And that means: the kids are about to be on summer break. The struggle for parents each summer is how to keep their children active and engaged during those long summer days while balancing their own work and life schedules, or just making sure the kids aren’t glued to their iPads all day. Thankfully there are several summertime programs for kids in Oakland County that are as educational as they are enjoyable for children of all ages.
Madison Heights
Formerly Kidpreneur, AccelerateKID – which develops today's children into tomorrow's entrepreneurs and innovators – offers camps in coding, game design, robotics, and digital arts. Camps are offered in three-hour blocks for five days at a time, but can be turned into a full day by booking both the morning and afternoon sessions.
Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center
At the BBAC, Camp faculty members are professional art educators who provide hands-on projects and activities that expose students to a variety of styles and art processes. Preschool and kindergarten children enter a magical world where they create, design, explore, and use their imagination. For Grades 1-5, campers rotate by age group to different studio classes for drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, and mixed media. Middle school students will be immersed in different studio art experiences that include drawing, painting, printmaking, and metalsmithing, or choose a specialty camp. For Grades 9-12, there are a variety of camp sessions that can provide meaningful learning opportunities or help the serious student get one step closer to college art programs.
Cranbrook Institute of Science
Bloomfield Hills
Focuses of specialty summer camps at Cranbrook include game design, wilderness survival skills, electronics and technology, and science camps designed for multiple age levels. Before and after care is also available for each of the camp programs.
Detroit Zoo
Royal Oak
You don’t need to travel to a different continent to have a fun safari: Summer Safari Camps at the Detroit Zoo get kids outdoors "in the wild" where they will learn about topics such as zookeeping, ecology, and animal welfare. Single-day and single-evening camps are also available, as is extended care for campers.
Jewish Community Center of Metro Detroit
West Bloomfield
The JCC offers a number of different summer camps targeted at different interests for children of all backgrounds and abilities. There is the Berman Summer Stock, in which children learn about acting, singing and dancing on stage, then appear in a full-scale production with older campers; the Hebrew Immersion Summer Camp, which enables kids to improve their Hebrew language skills; and Camp Connect, which provides opportunities for campers to connect with their typically developing peers as well as their peers with disabilities. There are also sports camps; creative camps; and leaders-in-training camps. Free chaperoned transportation to and from most areas in Oakland County, need-based financial aid, and discounts to JCC members are also available.
Lawrence Technological University
Lawrence Tech's summer camps are designed for incoming high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Day and residential options are available for students interested in engineering, technology, design, and science. High school students get to experience a bit of college life and college-level study as expert professors introduce them to the latest innovations in modern labs and studios on Lawrence Tech’s Southfield campus.
