Renowned jazz violinist Regina Carter will be on the Oakland University campus in Rochester on Sunday, February 3, 2013 to play with the OU Jazz Quartet, a faculty group comprised of musicians highly regarded beyond the Detroit metro region. Together they will perform a concert of music from favorite movies, including Cars, Finding Nemo, Apollo 13, Goodfellas and more. At Ms. Carter’s special request, it is a jazz concert for the whole family, and audience members young and old are invited to come dressed in a movie character costume.
Ms. Carter, a Grammy nominee and a 2006 recipient of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, is an OU alumna and a native Detroiter. She earned her bachelor’s degree in music from OU in 1985 and as an artist-in-residence at the university, she returns each year to teach master classes and to perform.
She combines a dazzling technical proficiency with a fresh approach to her instrument and a multicultural perspective. The family jazz concert will begin on Sunday, February 3 at 1 pm in Varner Recital Hall. Tickets are $20 general, $10 students, $6 for children 12 and under; free for children 12 and under who wear a costume.
