Howell-based Mattress World of Michigan, the state’s largest independent mattress retailer, has been acquired by Art Van, in a move that the Detroit News says will allow the homegrown furniture retailer to expand beyond Michigan.
The Howell-based mattress company owns 21 locations in Michigan and 7 in Indiana, many which will retain the Mattress World identity. Some will come under the mantle of Art Van PureSleep, the freestanding mattress outlets which Art Van has opened in Oakland County. Art Van spent $6 million to expand and renovate their bedding departments last month, while opening PureSleep outlets in Troy, Rochester and Canton. A fourth is planned for Brighton.
Mattress World started with a single store in Howell in 1998 and
prides itself on low prices and good service. Art Van started as a
4,000-square-foot showroom in what is now Eastpointe in 1959. The
privately held company does not release financial results, but trade
magazine Furniture/Today estimates Art Van sales rose 12 percent in 2010
to $430 million.
