Learn More About Healthy Food Options at the Oakland County Farmers Market

Be sure to bring your food-related questions to the Oakland County Farmers Market on Saturday, Jan. 18 for the first of six presentations in the 2020 Discover Michigan Fresh series. Experts from Michigan State University Extension – Health & Nutrition will provide growing, handling and preserving tips as well as healthy recipes to help you take advantage of the delicious Michigan-grown bounty from your backyard or the Oakland County Farmers Market.

Topics at the six free presentations that run through March include: Fruits, vegetables, gardening, food preservation and safety, meat, fish, eggs, nuts and more.

There will be two presentations at each session. The first, from 9-10 a.m., will be geared toward children while the second, from 11 a.m.-noon, is for adults. Since the topics build on information previously discussed, participants are encouraged to attend all six sessions.

“The Oakland County Farmers Market is the perfect place to learn more about fresh produce and how to incorporate more fruits and vegetables into daily meals,” Market Manager Jeremy Brown said. “The Discover Michigan Fresh series will introduce you to new varieties of produce as well as preservation and storage methods that you may not be familiar with that can extend the growing season and bring fresh produce to your table year round.”

The Oakland County Farmers Market is a producer-direct market, hosting nearly 100 farmers and artisans, representing 17 Michigan counties, throughout the year. In the winter, visitors may be surprised by the wide variety of fresh items available, including apples, honey, pasta, maple syrup, eggs, onions and potatoes.

The market will be open for shopping during the Discover Michigan Fresh series. Winter is a good time to speak with farmers to learn more about what they grow, when specific produce is expected to be available and tips for preparation.

The Discover Michigan Fresh series kicks off the winter season at the market. From January through April, the Oakland County Farmers Market is open from 7 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on Saturdays only. In addition to seasonal produce, the winter market features educational programming, cooking demonstrations and artisans offering handcrafted soaps, jewelry and more.

“We are looking forward to a fantastic 2020,” Brown said. “Get to know our farmers and vendors a little better and discover ways to keep your healthy New Year’s goals on track this winter.”

In addition to the Jan. 18 presentations, other Discover Michigan Fresh events in the series are planned for Feb. 1, Feb. 15, Feb. 29, March 7 and March 21.
