17th Annual Quake-On-The-Lake Inboard Hydroplane Races thunder across Pontiac Lake July 22-24

Get Ready! It’s Coming! The 2016 Quake-On-The-Lake Inboard Hydroplane Races is gearing up to host its historic 3rd consecutive American Power Boat Association (APBA) Summer Nationals, an honor which no other venue in North America has ever attained.

“For the first time in thirty-years, all APBA inboard classes will be at one race site competing for the Summer National Championship,” said Mary Anne Wilson, chairman of Quake-On-The-Lake.“ In addition, this year’s extraordinary event will feature 5 new race classes, including the Big, Bad and Loud Grand Prix which reach speeds of up to 150 miles per hour, 8 other classes will go head-to-head for honors and 5 classes of Flat Bottoms will join in the fun and excitement of the competition this year.”

Over the past sixteen years, inboard hydroplane racers have established twenty-one APBA World speed records in 5 different classes on, what many competitors consider the fastest one mile race course in North America. You can be sure some of those records will fall this year!

This speed-driven war on water will feature the return of 17 year old inboard hydroplane “wunderkind,” Ciara McClure of Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania, who will defend her 2015 Michigan Governor Cup Championship. Ciara, who started racing J-Stock hydroplanes in 2012, finished the 2015 racing season with an impressive eighteen 1st place finishes, one 2nd place finish and two 3rd place finishes. This included, in addition to the Governor’s Cup, The U.S. 1 National Championship winner
in the 1.5 liter class and victories in her first Divisional Race and her first National Race.

Quake 2016 kicks off Friday evening in glorious style with Pontoon boat Sunset Cruises and “Hot Summer Nights”, where patrons will be able to sample local beer, wine, cider and food.

While inboard hydroplane racing is Quake’s “bread & butter,” people also come out to experience the many other amenities provided like — ”The Biggest Beach Party in Oakland County” is Bigger and Better than ever featuring a wide assortment of organized games on the beach including limbo contests, Beach Pong, Hula Hoops, Beach Balls and Sand Sculptures. The Detroit Institute of Arts’ DIA Away will be on hand with its “Think Like an Artist” exhibit trailer, which is a mobile interactive classroom and creative exploration space designed for people of all ages.

The Rainbow Child Care Center Family Fun Zone is always a popular attraction for the young ones. They’ll be able to choose between an assortment of crafts and other activities, while also burning off excess energy on the “bouncy” equipment setup to bounce until their heart’s content. There’s also a rock climbing wall and Face Painting available.

“Let There Be Rock” a tribute to the early music of the legendary, Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame AC/DC band will light up the entertainment stage with high energy and rousing excitement Saturday from 6:00pm-7:30pm following a full day of racing and the APBA Awards presentations.

Other must-see features include the New Car Display sponsored by Szott Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge and Suburban Ford. The O’Reilly Classic Car Show will highlight 80-100 hot rods, original and modified vehicles, that will be rated by a panel of judges.

Year-after-year Quake has benefited the Rainbow Connection, a 501(c)3 charity founded by Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson in the early 80‘s that grants wishes to children with terminal or life threatening illnesses. This year seventeen year old Victoria, who lives in Chesterfield Township, has been selected as the 2016 Wish Child. Victoria was diagnosed in June, 2014 with leukemia and has undergone treatment at Children’s Hospital. Victoria is a HUGE fan of Harry Potter, so her Wish is
to visit The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida. By coming out to see and experience the pure excitement of Quake-On-The-Lake, you’ll play a major role in making Victoria’s dream of going to Universal Studios come true. Quake-On-The-Lake is proud to have shared more than $110,000 in charitable donations over the past sixteen years.
