The mission of the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA), a national non-profit organization, is in part to provide opportunities for women to help themselves grow personally and professionally through education. As a testament to their collective mission, the Novi Oaks Charter Chapter of the ABWA (based in Novi, MI) has announced it will offer one grant and two scholarships this year for the education of local students! The Bettie Archer Johnson Scholarship is offered to students of Madonna University, and interested students should contact the financial aid office at Madonna for more information. Two other opportunities are:
Novi Oaks’ Outright Grant – $1,500 Novi Oaks Charter Chapter is offering a $1,500 grant through the national ABWA’s Stephen Bufton Memorial Education Fund (SBMEF). Eligible applicants must (1) be a female U.S. citizen; (2) have completed 45 credit hours or more when applying for funds. Funds may be used when the applicant has completed 60 credit hours; (3) have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale; (4) be seeking a baccalaureate degree or higher; (5) be attending a Michigan institution authorized to confer degrees at the baccalaureate level or higher in the United States; (6) be sponsored by an eligible ABWA chapter/network.
Novi Oaks’ Impact Scholarship – $1,000 Novi Oaks Charter Chapter is also offering a $1,000 scholarship through SBMEF. Eligible applicants must (1) be a female U.S. citizen; (2) be a resident of Wayne or Oakland County; (3) have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale; (4) be seeking an associates degree; (5) be attending a Michigan institution authorized to confer degrees at the associate level in the United States; (6) be sponsored by an eligible ABWA chapter/network.
To apply, interested parties should send name, email address and phone number to Education Chair Sandy Schrah at Education@abwa-novi.org, with the subject line: “Outright Grant” or “Impact Scholarship” no later than February 15, 2013.
The recipients will be notified before July 2013. Each one-time grant or scholarship is not renewable. Checks will be issued jointly to the educational institution and the recipients. Funds are limited to tuition, books and fees. SBMEF offers National Scholarships for women specific to Nursing, Business, and Information Technology. Founded in 1949, ABWA has chapters and Express Networks nationwide, providing business skills training and networking opportunities for women of diverse occupations to enhance career advancement and personal development. Novi Oaks Charter Chapter is a part of this national network, and although it funds and sets eligibility requirements for its grants and scholarships, recipients are determined by a selection board comprised of trustees of the SBMEF.
