“Placemaking” is theme for Oakland County’s 15th Annual Heritage Conference

Oakland County’s 15th Annual Heritage Conference is set for Sept. 19 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Milford Presbyterian Church, 238 N. Main St., in Milford. The theme is “Placemaking.”

Registration for the day-long event is $35, which includes continental breakfast, lunch, sessions and tour, is available here. The deadline is Sept. 12.

“Oakland County’s quality of place is an important component of our economic development strategy,” said Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson. “Along with business diversity and a skilled workforce, quality of place helps keep Oakland County’s economy strong.”

The conference brings together individuals from various backgrounds, who deal with the built and natural environment, to discuss ways to improve their communities. The conference attracts nearly 200 local and regional governmental staff, elected officials, developers, architects, realtors, consultants, and small business owners as well as representatives from environmental and historical interests.

Located in western Oakland County, Milford capitalizes on place-based assets including a historic downtown business district, close-knit walkable neighborhoods and extensive recreational resources including frontage on the Huron River, biking and hiking trails, and regional and state parks. Downtown Milford embodies quality of place. 

The keynote speaker is Jim Houk, managing principal at Orchard, Hiltz & McCliment, Inc. His presentation, “Something From Nothing: Where to Start When There is No ‘Place’ to be Found,” looks at sparking interest and encouraging community reinvestment.

Deputy Oakland County Executive Matthew Gibb will give opening remarks.

Ann Barnette, Milford DDA Executive Director will speak about what makes Milford great, followed by walking tours of downtown Milford and historic neighborhoods, and lunch in Central Park. The conference is sponsored by Oakland County Planning & Economic Development Services, the Milford Downtown Development Authority, and the Huron Valley Chamber.
