Union leaders, GM officials and the governor all joined forces Oct. 7 to officially announce the car company’s plans to build a new Buick in Oakland County.
Production of a second car line will stabilize the future of the Orion Township GM plant, which had been threatened with extinction during GM’s bankruptcy in 2009.
Orion Township will now be home to two brand-new compact car lines available on the market: the Chevrolet Aveo and the Buick Verano.
The Verano is a small sedan modeled after a four-door Buick Excelle, currently on sale in China. To American auto fans, it will more closely resemble the Chevrolet Cruze. Upgrading these compact cars is expected to return a higher price tag — not to mention 1200 GM jobs to Orion Township.
