Oakland County parks hosts snow trekker schools

OAKLAND COUNTY –

Snow is falling and cross-county ski and snowshoeing schools are in session.

The Oakland County Parks 2009 Snow Trekker Schools are set for: January 17 & 24; February 14 & 28; and March 14 & 28 at Independence Oaks County Park. On each date, cross-country ski clinics will be held 10 a.m. – noon and snowshoeing clinics 1 – 3 p.m., weather permitting.

“Snowshoeing is a fun, inexpensive and easy-to-learn winter sport the whole family can enjoy,” Derenda Howard, recreation program supervisor – outdoor recreation & camps, said. “You don’t need special footwear or clothing to go snowshoeing – cold-weather hiking gear works great.”

The cost for each class is $10/person; instruction and use of snowshoes included. Pre-register one week in advance. Class fee includes park entry.

Group reservations are available at Independence Oaks during clinic times or by special appointment with a minimum of 10 people. GO Snowshoe! Clinics are available by appointment at any location in Oakland County.

Ten miles of groomed and marked trails and ski rentals are available for open cross-country skiing at Independence Oaks. The park is located at 9501 Sashabaw Road in Clarkston.
