South Lyon landmark celebrates 100 years.
One hundred years ago, the Witch’s Hat Depot in South Lyon was a gathering place for gossip, mail and news.
And local historians are hoping it will be a community hot spot for another century as they celebrate its 100th birthday this year with events including a cemetery tour to honor the men who worked at the depot, which is on the state’s historic registry. Historians say the depot was first dedicated in the summer of 1909.
“Before television and before phones, there were depots,” said Anthony Rzucidlo, president of the Michigan Railroad Club. “That’s where people would gather, talk, get the news.”
