Spring household hazardous waste collection breaks all previous records

The last spring North Oakland Household Hazardous Waste Consortium (NO HAZ) collection broke all records for the number of participants who attended collection events. During the 6 hour event held at Oakland University in Rochester on May 30, over 2,400 vehicles brought old stains, oil-based paints, motor oil, pesticides, antifreeze, cleaners, electronics, and other items to the collection. Although the wait in line was up to an hour at one time, participants seemed to take the wait good naturedly. The Consortium thanks participants for the patience and generosity.

The NO HAZ program is a free service for residents of member communities; however, donations are accepted. The communities are charged for each car that attends a collection event. Therefore, the NO HAZ Consortium asks that residents gather all of their household hazardous waste and attend only one collection event per year. If a resident only has one or two items, they are encouraged to store them in a safe manner until they have other items to bring, or to seek alternate disposal opportunities. There are certain items, such as motor oil that can be disposed of at retail locations. Residents can visit the NO HAZ website at www.nohaz.com or call 248-858-1352 for additional information.

Items collected at the NO HAZ events include: household paints and stains, antifreeze, gasoline, kitchen and bath cleaners and polishes, mercury and mercury thermometers, aerosols, pesticides, herbicides and computer and electronic equipment. For a more comprehensive list of accepted materials, or for additional disposal information, visit the NO HAZ website at www.nohaz.com, or call the NO HAZ Hotline at 248-858-5656.

Two additional collections will be held in the fall on Saturday, September 12th at Oakland Community College Highland Lakes campus in Waterford and Saturday, October 17th at the Orion Commerce Center in Orion Township.

The collection is open to residents of Addison Township, Commerce Township, Groveland Township, Lake Angelus, Lake Orion, Leonard, Oakland Township, Orion Township, Oxford, Oxford Township, Rochester, Rochester Hills, Waterford Township, White Lake Township and Wolverine Lake. Please note that Brandon Township and the Village of Ortonville are not participating in the program this year. Residents of other communities should contact their city, village or township office for disposal options.

NO HAZ is a consortium of 11 Oakland County communities representing 15 local governments that offer residents a safe and environmentally responsible way to dispose of household hazardous waste. Its goal is to provide residents with a regular, reliable and easily accessible collection service. Over the last six years, residents of more than 12,000 households have participated in the program and over 1,200,000 pounds of hazardous materials have been collected and recycled or properly disposed of. If you are interested in volunteering at one of the NO HAZ collection events, please send an email to wrmd@oakgov.com. The NO HAZ Consortium would like to extend a big thank you to Oakland University for their support of the program.
