Autumn brings cooler temperatures, changing leaf colors and lots and lots of activities at the 13 Oakland County parks:
 
Sept. 4-6

  • The new Zip Line will be at Addison Oaks County Park from 3-9 p.m. Sept. 4-6. Cost is $10 a day or $5 a ride. Participants have to be more than 45 pounds and cannot weigh more than 250. They will also need shoes – no flip flops. Participants will need to sign a waiver or have a parent or legal guardian sign the waiver if younger than 17 years old. Sept. 5

Sept. 12

  • Oakland County Parks is giving away free wood chips from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 12 at Orion Oaks County Park. The wood chips consist of assorted types of wood collected from pruning and storm damage. Bring shovels or pitchforks, wheelbarrows and buckets. All wood chips must be manually self-loaded into pick-up trucks and small trailers with a tarp. No commercial haulers allowed.   • Create a Terrarium at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 12 at the Oakland County Market, 2350 Pontiac Lake Road, Waterford. Two to three small plants will be planted in a see through container to watch them grow. This terrarium will teach children what plants need to survive and thrive. This is an educational program presented by MSUE Master Gardeners with funding provided by Genisys Credit Union. Join a Monarch Watch Educational Specialist to learn more about the monarch’s migration and how the scientific community is monitoring its populations across North America. See live monarchs emerging from their chrysalis and being tagged to track their journey south. Cost is $3/person. The dogs-only swim is from noon- 4:55 p.m. and is divided into five time slots by dog size. The event also features contests for Best Wet Look and Best Swimsuit. Sept. 16

  • The Addison Oaks County Park Senior Trip and Buhl Estate Historical Talk will cover the rich history of Addison Oaks County Park that dates back more than 100 years. Two sessions will be held on Sept. 16. The 8:30 a.m. session will include breakfast and the noon session includes lunch. Cost is $22 per person/session. Pre-registration and prepayment only.   • Haunted Hallows weekend from Sept. 18-20 at Groveland Oaks Campground features spooktacular fun with family-friendly games and contests. Enjoy Halloween crafts, trick or treating, Haunted Island, campsite decorating contest, Halloween face painting, a DJ dance and hayrides.   • The Warren Orlick Memorial Golf Outing begins at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 18 at White Lake Oaks Golf Course, 991 Williams Lake Road, White Lake. The event is a nine-hole modified scramble by ability.   • Make fruit sand art necklaces and learn about food preservation at 8:30 a.m. Sept. 19 at the Oakland County Market, 2350 Pontiac Lake Road, Waterford. Children can make fruit sand art necklaces while learning about nutrition. Also, a food preservation demonstration will be available for adults.   • Canines, Coffee & Conversation will be held from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Sept. 19 at Red Oaks Dog Park, 31353 Dequindre in Madison Heights. Alex Bencsik, Behavior Buddies by Camp Bow Wow certified dog trainer and behavior specialist will read the book, “Scout Says, Dogs Get Nervous Too,” written from a dog’s perspective.   • Protecting the Clinton River Watershed is scheduled for 10 a.m.-noon Sept. 19 at Waterford Oaks County Park, 2800 Watkins Lake Road in Waterford. Meet at the administration building for a short program about the Clinton River Watershed and how what we all do on land impacts the water quality in the river. Then, hit the trails to collect debris and look at the macro invertebrates in Pontiac Creek. Gloves are provided or bring your own. Dress for working outdoors.   • Hike Into History will be held from 1-3 p.m. Sept. 19 at Red Oaks Nature Center, 30300 Hales Road, Madison Heights. Officially dedicated in 1955, Madison Heights is a proud city with a rich history. Learn about the events that have shaped the landscape of southeastern Michigan, from mile-high glaciers to underground rivers. Cost is $4/person. Sept. 24

  • A Senior Market FRESH program will be held at 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 24 at the Oakland County Market, 2350 Pontiac Lake Road, Waterford. Seniors can attend a short nutrition presentation on the benefits of fresh produce in their diet and, if they meet the eligibility requirements, receive coupons for locally grown fresh produce from the farmers market. Find out about all about the different varieties of Michigan grown apples and what they are best for. Learn what to look for when purchasing, quality, nutritional value and preservation.
