Oakland County Parks and recreation hosts kite flying exhibition over Catalpa Oaks

Oakland County Parks and Recreation hosts Kites Over Catalpa from noon – 3 p.m. on June 19 at Catalpa Oaks County Park.

The free kite festival features Windjammers, a professional, local kite team that performs kite shows internationally. The group will perform a dual-line flying routine, including hands-on interaction with participants.

After the performance, the Windjammers group will be available to help fly kites and answer questions.

“Flying kites is a great outdoor activity for all ages,” Recreation Program Supervisor Laurie Stasiak said. “This event will offer adults and children a unique opportunity to see a live show and to learn a new recreational hobby.”

The festival also includes kite crafts, caricatures, games and activities, food vendors and Oakland County Parks and Recreation inflatable units.

BloKart demonstrations and information will also be available. A BloKart is a wind-powered vehicle used to sail on land.

Attendees can bring a kite or purchase a kite kit at the event. Assistance with assembling and decorating kites will be provided.

Catalpa Oaks County Park is located at 27725 Greenfield Road in Southfield.

On Aug. 3, 2010, Oakland County voters will be asked to vote on the renewal of a 10-year millage of .2415 for the purpose of operating, maintaining, improving and acquiring parks and recreation areas and facilities in Oakland County.
