Oakland County librarians’ blog names world’s worst books, get national attention

Local librarians start a blog listing the worst books and get national attention.

What started out as a “nerdy little project” — a blog on the worst books libraries have to offer — is garnering two metro-area librarians international attention.

Mary Kelly and Holly Hibner started the blog Awful Library Books in April to add some zing to an industry convention speech on the quality of collections in public libraries. But the blog, which receives submissions from around the world, has been mentioned on sites like www.boingboing.net. The pair appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” on Thursday and has done interviews for the BBC and Time magazine.

“We’re bowled over by the attention,” said Kelly, an adult services librarian with the Salem-South Lyon District Library. “Initially, we couldn’t even get our own families to read it.”
