American Sailing Institute beginners classes start May 26

Sailing in Oakland County? Yep! The American Sailing Institute at Kensington and Stony Creek metroparks will begin May 26.

The beauty of joining the non-profit ASI is members learn how to sail
and can glide through the water without owning a sailboat. ASI has
boats at Kensington and Stony Creek metroparks, as well as at the
Jefferson Beach Marina on Lake St. Clair.

“Owning a boat is
extremely expensive. My J/24 (sailboat) was a bottomless pit of money
for maintenance, insurance, you name it,” O’Reilly said. “The club is
one-tenth the cost. And you have all those boats at your disposal. From a
cost perspective, the club makes an awful amount of sense.”

ASI
offers four levels of sailing classes. Everyone has to start with the
first level and pass written and practical tests before starting classes
at the next level.

“It doesn’t matter what kind of
experience you have sailing,” O’Reilly. “Everyone starts at the same
spot.”
