2016 Recreation Assistance Partnership Program funding approved

The Oakland County Parks and Recreation Commission approved $150,000 to support the 2016 Recreation Assistance Partnership Program (RAPP), which awards grants to local communities for outreach recreation programs.

“We are fortunate to have a parks and recreation commission that believes in making recreational opportunities available to all,” Chief of Recreation Programs and Services Terry Fields said. “The RAPP program provided recreation activities to more than 500,000 residents in 2015. Many of these participants may not otherwise have had access to these recreational opportunities.”

Outreach programs available through RAPP include GO! Cache, GO! Golf and GO! Fish clinics; Bouncer, Festival II and Mini Festival inflatable units; and bus trips.

New this year is a nature component, Fields said. Participants can choose to bring StarLab, an inflatable planetarium, to their community or take a field trip to Wint Nature Center in Independence Oaks County Park or Red Oaks Nature Center in Red Oaks County Park.

“I am pleased that we will be able to continue promoting collaborative opportunities and bringing these community-driven programs to Oakland County residents,” she said.

RAPP has a long history of providing enriching outreach programs and bus transportation for recreational experiences. Since 1982, the program has supported outreach programming to cities, villages, townships, community parks and recreation departments, schools, downtown development authorities, non-profit organizations and other groups in Oakland County.

The initiative is part of Oakland County Parks and Recreation’s Strategic Master Plan that commits resources to create community through people, parks and programs. Outreach programming is available from Memorial Day through Labor Day and awarded through a grant process.

Grants are dispersed on a first-come, first-served basis beginning in mid-February. For more information and a RAPP application, visit DestinationOakland.com or contact Recreation Programs and Services at 248-858-0916.
