After six years of hard work, a rebuilt bike path along I-275 is winning raves from Metro Detroit bikers.
The path, which runs from Novi to Monroe, was built decades ago as an
experiment but fell into disrepair. Thanks to the efforts of the Friends
of I-275 Metro Trail, they were able to use federal stimulus dollars
and persuade MDOT to help rehabilitate 40 miles of the trail through
Wayne and Oakland counties.
Dave Duffield of the Friends said his group is now responsible for
keeping the path clean. They hope to improve enough of the trail so it
will soon let riders go from the Detroit River to the Willow, Lower
Huron and Oakwoods metroparks. Today, though, riders were just happy to
race across bridges and the undulating asphalt along the highway.
