Ferndale hires first female city manager

Ferndale City Council voted unanimously June 17 to elect Ypsilanti’s
Assistant City Manager and Director of Administrative Services, April
McGrath, to the head position of city manager. It’s a first in the
city’s 84-year history.

McGrath, who beat out two other candidates for the job, impressed
candidates with her passion for green initiatives, transit issues and
shared city services. They were also reassured by her experience in
Ypsilanti, a city with similar population and issues to Ferndale’s.

Excerpt:

Members of council took a few moments to praise McGrath during the
brief June 17 meeting.””I am very impressed with her skill set and the
vision that she brings to Ferndale,” said Councilwoman Melanie Piana. “I
believe she will serve the community very well.”

Added Mayor Dave Coulter, “She will fit in perfectly with the staff and
city of Ferndale. I think she has our personality … and the skills that
we are looking for. I’m confident that she will be very successful
here.”
