Prosper’s Top Stories of 2016

As 2016 finally comes to a close, we here at Oakland County Prosper took a moment to look back at our top stories from this past year. As we look forward to what's ahead in 2017, we would like to share these highlights from the last 12 months to remember the year that was!

(1) Clawson's Woodpile BBQ Shack cooks low and slow for the best barbecue
In metro Detroit we love our barbecue, so when the Woodpile BBQ Shack opened in Clawson in the former A&W location backed by a team of who's whos from the local culinary scene and a nationally-ranked pitmaster, it was kind of a big deal. A big enough deal, in fact, that it was our most-read story of the year!

(2) M1 Concourse brings an experiential retail and entertainment destination for car fanatics to Pontiac
Another major opening of 2016 was the M1 Concourse in Pontiac, where the Motor City's deep-rooted car culture meets luxury entertainment in the largest car condo community in the country.

(3) Lake Norcentra Park on the Rochester College campus is open to serve the community
An ambitious plan to turn the center of the Rochester College campus into a destination park and outdoor recreation space has been moving forward steadily and with major support. We reported on Lake Norcentra Park plans back in April and have regularly kept up on news updates since then as more funding has been secured and work has continued to progress on the park.

(4) The Village of Holly Heats Up
The charming Village of Holly has become a hotbed of entrepreneurship with several successful locally-owned businesses already established and a few noteworthy new ones – including the Holly Farm & Flea Market owned by HGTV's Cari Cucksey – garnering attention from all over metro Detroit.

(5) Young entrepreneur creates Zollipops for kids to have candy that's actually good for them
What were you doing when you were 10 years old? Odds are it was nothing even remotely comparable to what 10-year-old Alina Morse has been doing – creating a line of hard candies that promote dental health and growing that company to international acclaim while earning nods from the likes of CNBC, Forbes, and Michelle Obama.

(6) Motor City Guitar is a musician's Wonderland where everyone is treated like family
New businesses tend to make the news a lot more often than decades-old established businesses where the owners keep their heads down and just keep doing what they do best and to the overwhelming satisfaction of their customers. So when we profiled the nearly-30-year-old Motor City Guitar in March, the story of an independently-owned company owned by a passionate, caring married couple who treat all of their customers as part of their family resonated with many of you, too.

(7) Family-Friendly Halloween Fun Throughout Oakland County
Through the incredible detailed research of Oakland County Moms, we were able to deliver you an extensive (though not exhaustive) guide to family-friendly Halloween fun all through the month of October. And it was a hit! So that probably means we should do it again next year?

(8) Summer Camps in Oakland County
Another guide to family-friendly seasonal activities also ranked among our top stories this year. Okay, we get the hint!
