Farmington Hills-based PR agency Marx Layne & Co. celebrates 25th year

As Marx Layne & Company, a Farmington Hills-based public relations, digital and social media agency, celebrates in 2012 its 25th year in business, President Michael Layne attributes much of the agency’s success to its position in Oakland County.
“The county has always been one of the most prosperous in the nation,” Layne said. “And we have found it to be an outstanding location for our agency, in terms of proximity to small and emerging businesses, as well as Fortune 500 companies.”
The agency began in a small Birmingham office, shared with a real estate firm, and an early Macintosh computer. A year later, Layne and co-founder Fred Marx, who died in 2009 at the age of 67, moved the budding two-man PR firm to Bloomfield Hills, where it remained for five years.
A third move in 1993 to Farmington Hills in the Northwestern Highway commercial corridor offered the optimal setting for the growing shop and its employees.
Today, the agency’s contemporary offices overlook a wooded area with evergreen trees, a pond and resident deer, accommodating some 30 staffers. Employees enjoy Oakland County’s restaurants, shops, green space, and overall high-quality experience. A few even bring their dogs to work.
Marx Layne serves automotive OEMs and suppliers, hospitals, leading law firms, real estate developers, quick-service restaurants, wireless communication providers and retailers – all in Oakland County, the vibrant and successful epicenter of a megalopolis with 4.7 million people.
“Although many agencies here were preaching the need to go global, we’ve always seen ourselves as an Oakland County-based marketing agency, serving clients that primarily wish to reach Michigan and the Midwest,” Layne said.
Though the changing nature of communications has led to an increase in business from across the country and the world, the PR veteran continued, there’s still plenty of opportunity to mine right in Oakland County.
Marx Layne has earned an unparalleled reputation as a top-notch public relations, public affairs and digital media firm. Layne works closely with an executive management team that includes Jennifer Cherry, Leslie Pardo, Michael Szudarek and Alan Upchurch. Together, they’re building on the Marx Layne vision, keeping the agency at the forefront of new technology, and defining and managing key messages for clients through traditional news outlets, social media and special events to cost-effectively engage consumers and maintain a two-way conversation with them.
