announced today that the Community Choice Foundation is now accepting applications for its annual scholarship program. For the seventh year in a row, the Community Choice Foundation is encouraging the area’s best and brightest students to apply for up to $100,000 in scholarships. The program is designed specifically to keep Michigan’s young talent in the state.
Scholarships of up to $5,000 each will be awarded to high school seniors from Wayne, Oakland and Macomb Counties. All Community Choice Credit Union members are also eligible to apply, regardless of where they reside.
Applications are being accepted online at CommunityChoiceFoundation.com through Monday, February 2, 2015.
Eligible applicants must plan on attending a Michigan college or university, and must pledge to stay in Michigan after college graduation. Scholarship applicants will be evaluated based on grade point average, dedication to community service and a written essay.
Since launching the program in 2009, the Community Choice Foundation has awarded more than $600,000 in college scholarships to 121 Southeast Michigan students.
“Retaining young talent is vital to ensuring a strong economy in the state of Michigan,”’ said President and CEO of Community Choice Credit Union Robert Bava. “Community Choice Credit Union stands behind our local students, providing the support needed to help build their careers in Michigan. Together, we can retain Michigan’s talented and motivated future leaders.”
According to the Detroit Free Press, Michigan’s brain drain has shown slight improvement since the recession, but still persists. The Bureau of Labor Market Information and Initiatives reports that approximately 19,000 college-educated people ages 22-34 moved to Michigan in 2012, while about 28,000 individuals left the state, netting a loss of roughly 9,000 people and -2.2 percent domestic migration rate. Michigan saw its highest migration rate in 2007 and 2008 at -4.2 percent.
The scholarship program goes beyond merely providing financial assistance, by truly engaging scholars in Michigan communities. For the past two years, the Community Choice Foundation has organized a volunteer event for present scholars and alumni at Michigan Miracle League, a little league program for children with disabilities.
“At Community Choice Credit Union, giving back is an approach that defines our daily culture and is a quality we look for in each of our scholars,” said Abbey Dinsmore, foundation coordinator for Community Choice Credit Union.
The newest 2015 scholars will be welcomed to the group during an award presentation in May.
The Community Choice Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, relies on generous support from the Credit Union, local businesses, the community and Credit Union members to make the scholarship program possible. Sponsorships begin at $500 and go up to a full $5,000 scholarship level. Donations of every amount are accepted. To donate, or for questions regarding the application process, please contact Foundation Coordinator Abbey Dinsmore at 877.243.2528, ext. 1128 or email ADinsmore@CommunityChoiceCU.com.
