Year-round activities and events abound in Oakland County, where health, wellness and fun are part of the quality-of-life landscape. From amateur hockey and hydroplane races to half-marathons and more, Oakland County gets people up and moving. Here are just some of the events aimed at keeping county residents happy, healthy and on the go – "Count Your Steps," Fire & Ice Fest, Oakland Edge Adult Hockey Tournament, and the Brooksie Way Half-Marathon.


International Velodrome at Bloomer Park

Rochester Hills resident Dale Hughes is bringing a world-class velodrome to Detroit

A $4 million multi-sport complex is coming to the City of Detroit. The Detroit Fitness Foundation is funding the project, and Executive Director Dale Hughes will design a world-class cycling velodrome as part of the plan. The foundation also hopes to one day launch a professional track riding team in Detroit. 

The Brooksie Way

The Brooksie Way Celebrates its 10th Anniversary in 2017

2017 marks the tenth year for the flagship Brooksie Way Half Marathon, the road race named in memory of Brooks Stuart Patterson, Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson's 28-year-old son who died in a tragic snowmobile accident. The Brooksie Way now encompasses two popular annual road races, a minigrant program that supports health and fitness initiatives throughout the county, and a variety of family-friendly events.

The Art of Caregiving offers respite through visual arts for those who take care of others

It is the caregivers who often get overlooked when discussing issues around treatment and care for Alzheimer's and dementia patients. On November 17, the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center launches their new program, The Art of Caregiving, a free visual arts respite program for those tending to elderly patients with Alzheimer's and dementia.
